Knitting Meme

I’ve seen this meme on a handful of blogs and decided that it’d be fun to do.

a blast from the past

Since I don't have any photogenic progress on the afghan, I thought I'd bring out a bit of knitting history. Here is my first project that used more than one color. It's the famous ohm hat that I gave to Sam a couple years ago...and will match his maybe future tattoo.

The picture's a little blurry and the colors are a little inaccurate, but this project was what made me start taking photos of my work.

hopefully there will be more afghan progress soon!

...I have an excuse

Ok, so you may have noticed the lack of posts in the last few days or so. And the lack of new pictures for a while now. The problem is that the only project I'm allowing myself to work on at the moment is the afghan. And the pictures of its progress are not that interesting. When it's all done, then you will get as many pictures as your heart desires.

Also, my hands are absolutely killing me. No, not from knitting, from mountain biking. I went up to Winter Park (you know, the ski resort, only in the summer it's a mountain biking, etc park) and biked and biked and biked. It was amazing, but brutal on my hands. So no knitting for a few days while I recover.

But I'll be back to it soon enough.

Rings

...I have discovered how to add links to NetRings... meaning that I'll be connected to other knitting blogs. Pretty sweet really. Though I should be working on that afghan now, and not typing. I'm almost halfway done with it and have only about 3 weeks left until I need to mail it.

Woot!

Note to self:

Man, this afghan is taking forever!! Usually I like to break up large projects by working on multiple things at the same time. BUT I have to finish this thing by the end of July, so there really isn't time to work on smaller projects simultaneously. ahhhh! It'll be worth it though....it's looking awesome, if I do say so myself. ...just gotta keep on chuggin'!

Afghan continued...

I finished one of the cable strips in Alaska, and am now almost done with cable strip #2. I still have to make 2 more cable pieces, plus 2 honeycomb pieces, plus one lattice piece. So the moral of the story is that I'm making progress but still have a long way to go.

Here's a close-up of the cable pattern, but the color is way too dark. The color in the first picture is accurate.

let's here those afghan cheers!

More Alaska Yarn

Here are the other yarns that I bought in Alaska. Both also superwash Merino and hand-dyed. I got two skeins of the blue/purple/black mix and only one of the teal.

The colors in these pictures are actually pretty accurate, so that's good. I haven't decided what exactly I'm going to make with them. I'm thinking some sort of footwear, but I'll keep you all in the loop.

Alaska Rocks! (and I made some socks)

Pretty much the only thing I bought while in Alaska was yarn. Delicious, lovely, hand-dyed in Alaska yarn. And I made these socks out of 1 of the skeins while I was still in Alaska. The yarn is superwash Merino and the socks were knit on US 6, so they were rather speedy.

Ta-da!

These socks have both a short-row heel and a short-row toe. Though the cool thing about these is that they have kind of a strange assembly.

I was out of town when I made these with had no access to the internet and I wasn't sure if I remembered how to graft properly, so I decided to make these in a way that required no grafting.

I started by casting on 1/2 on the total stitches onto 2 needles at once. Then I made it a sort of provisional cast-on by purling the stitches off of one of the cast on needles and keeping them on the other cast on needle. If that doesn't really make sense, it's ok...it's hard to be entirely clear with no specific pictures.

Anyway, I made the short-row toe to start and then, when the toe was done, connected it in the round and made the foot, then made the heel, then the leg, and the cast-off edge was also done on two needles at once to make it extra loose.

The socks themselves are rather loose and comfy and very very soft. This yarn was wonderful to work with. As the picture above shows, the heel can sort of pucker when you point your toe because it's not that tight. But when the foot is relaxed, everything fits delightfully.

Overall, it was a very fun project. They were my first toe-up pair and I was able to just knit until the yarn was gone, making them much taller than I initially anticipated. Very cool.
